Toddler Parkour

The Pseudonymous Family is moving to a new house this week. Although our current residence has served us well, it leaves little space for my wife and me to chase our little Ewoks around and has an air conditioner that was installed around the time Return of the Jedi was released. This does not bode well in the 115-degree Arizona summer, as it runs constantly and sh!tily and still does not sufficiently cool the house.

Accordingly, we’re very much looking forward to our new place’s additional square footage, reduced electricity bill, and gargantuan master bedroom closet organizer (a feature my wife literally dances about at its mere mention).

As we’ve been packing up the house, the Twins have been in rare form, no doubt thrown off by the disturbance in The Force due to their constantly-changing surroundings. While my daughter has fully integrated the word “No” into her vocabulary (Yeah. I’m in trouble.), my son has begun to test physical boundaries, exploring the limits of both furniture he’s allowed on and his own body. In fact, once we’d emptied the bookshelf in his bedroom the other day, we discovered a new talent of his, as illustrated by the following footage:

Fear not, O Loyal Reader, no toddlers were harmed in the making of this video, and yes, that is my lovely wife catching him to prevent such a tragedy (nice snag, babe).

Having witnessed our son’s death-defying stunt, there was only one thing to do. I turned to my wife and asked, “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

“We need to take down the shelves?”

“Oh. Well, I was going to say we should find him a Spider-Man suit, but that works, too.”

Yes, I realize I promised you Twinfamyland. More is coming, as soon as relocating the Twinfamy World Headquarters stops punching my writing time in the groin. I electronically pinky-swear.

  1. I just learned what parkour was the other day when I saw a video of a dog who is an expert at it. I like your son’s video better! Good luck with the move!

    1. Thanks! We’re really excited for our new place. It’s a step up in a lot of ways, so that’ll be really nice.

    1. That is an excellent idea. Putting it on my Christmas Gift idea list for her.

  3. Do you think the spiderman suit would control their spiderman activities? Like confine those activities to when they’re actually wearing the suit? I would immediately get one for my son, if it did so…

    1. That, my friend, is an excellent question, possibly even a decent research question for my dissertation (https://twinfamy.com/2012/08/19/discarded-research-questions-from-my-dissertation-a-non-exhaustive-list/). It could have a similar effect to that Modern Family episode at Disneyland where they got Lily those hard-to-walk-in shoes so she wouldn’t take off running. It stands to reason that an outfit that restricts movement could help out in that regard.

  4. It is fun to watch boys test their boundaries. We have bar height kitchen chairs with his high chair sitting on top of one and he will climb up the chair and into high chair.

The nice thing, it saves us the energy of bending down and picking him up. Lazy yes, smart oh yes!

    1. The climbing cracks me up, too. I definitely need to watch, but it’s pretty cool to see what they’re able to scale. I wish I was that awesome. I would use my powers for good, I swear.

  6. What. Take down the shelves and stifle his obvious talent.

    1. It’s hard to draw the line, isn’t it? Do I take the shelves down in favor of safety, or is that keeping him from the Olympic gold that could come from early training?

  7. How exciting to get some more space!
I’ve got a love/hate relationship with moving. Hate that we have so much stuff. Love how easy it is to toss it while packing. Although, honestly, I’m hoping for a small contained fire before our next move!

    1. Haha, yeah, I always get to a certain point where all of the “non-essential” day-to-day stuff is already packed and don’t even miss it, which makes me wonder why we keep hauling it from place to place. I do like the opportunity to lighten the load by taking a look at everything and deciding what really stays.

  8. He definitely needs a Spidey suit now that he has (almost) mastered climbing. Yes, dangerous, but dare I say, also cute how his little chubby legs climb the shelf. ;-) Your wife has some great reflexes! Good catch!

    1. Yeah the cuteness is undeniable. My favorite part is the moment he realizes he can’t sit up all the way and decides he needs to “eject.” The wife really stepped up there. :)

    1. It is. It’s nice to see I’m not alone in it, and I’m really grateful for the time I’m able to spend with them. Most dads aren’t so fortunate. Thanks so much for reading.
